12 Miles off the coast of Rhode Island sits a little paradise called Block Island. Settled in
1672, this Atlantic jewel is just seven miles long and three miles wide, but boasts astounding natural beauty and the perfect refuge for New England boaters.

Accommodations

New Harbor, on the West Side of the Island in the beautiful Great Salt Pond, is completely enclosed and has 3 large marinas (Paynes Dock, Block Island Boat Basin and Champlains Marina), 90 town moorings and anchorage for 1000 yachts.

Old Harbor, on the East Side of the Island, is protected by a breakwater, but has limited dockage (Ballards).

What to do

Mansion Beach - Off Mansion Road. Here, tucked quaintly behind the dunes, you’ll find a wide-open beach and the best body surfing break on the island.

The Oar - Walk from New Harbor to this favorite local haunt. Gaze at the massive collection of decorated oars hanging from the ceiling, while enjoying one of their famous mudslides and a lobster roll.

Club Soda – Take an old island house, convert the downstairs into a club, complete with pool tables, vintage jukebox, and sprawling bar—voila, you’ve got a recipe for good times. Open Mic Night on Wednesdays. Go early if you want to play, the island is full of Grammy-chasing hopefuls and salty dog singers.

The National – Despite the fact that it’s teaming with off-the-ferry tourists asking questions like “is the island really square?” this enormous inn is a people-watching paradise, and offers a great view of Old Harbor, Reliably good entertainment and dependable food.

Block also boasts 32 miles of hiking trails, 17 miles of beaches, historic buildings, including 2 lighthouses, and plenty of shopping.
